Mercy Connect is thrilled to announce the 2024 recipient of the Sister Scholastica Scholarship, Ghalia Sleman, a year 10 student from Wagga Wagga High School in Victoria.
Ghalia, who has been in Australia for two years, has shown great determination and relentlessness to improve her English and education. She also has shown great leadership skills in other extracurricular activities, through sporting groups and her part-time job.
Ghalia accepted the scholarship, saying the funds received will bring peace and joy, and will help her to buy things for school that she would otherwise not have been able to purchase.
The Scholarship was initiated by Mercy Connect to pay tribute to the work and volunteerism of Sister Scholastica rsm to recognise over 70 years of faithful and Mercy-led service.
Sister Scholastica, also known to Mercy Connect family as “Sr Schol”, commenced working at Mercy Connect in1993 and retired in 2021. Sr Schol remains a dearly loved and respected member of the Mercy Connect family and local community. She worked at Mercy Connect Corporate Office in the administration department and also dedicated many voluntary hours working with participants. This year Sr Schol celebrated her 99th birthday.
Saint Scholastica is the patron Saint of Benedictine nuns, education, and convulsive children. Taking the name Scholastica, greatly signifies Sr Schol’s love, passion and dedication for education.
The Sister Scholastica Scholarship is designed to recognise and reward students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential, and a passion for making a positive impact in their communities. It is aimed at promoting education and empowering young women to pursue their dreams.
